The Elections Commission of Maldives responding to IDP leader Umar Naseer who was forced to drop out from his own registered Islamic Democratic Party, denied his request to abolish the party. The commission in a press release announced publicly that it is not possible to cancel the registration and abolish the party as requested by Umar Naseer.
Commission said that it held discussions regarding the issue after the commission investigated the proposal by Umar Naseer and the submission cannot be accepted as it may violate ordinary members of the party who were refusing to give in for Umar Naseer’s insistency.
Further the commission said that in the meetings which decided on the abolition of the party, the leader did not produce appropriate documents. The minutes of the party gathering produced at the commission showed the meeting that discussed the abolition of the party was illegal.
IDP was registered in December 12, 2005 with today the number of the members increased to 5384, the commission said that its evaluation to the party meeting that concluded to abolish was not legally appropriate. It said the legal quorum for decision making was unattended.
